The Unfortunate Quadraspouses of Jacob with Kathleen Derbyshire

Jacob's Family

What do you do when you find yourself in an unfortunate situation that you cannot change?

I was brought into salvation in 2003 while married to an unsaved man and rearing four unsaved kids. No one else in my family was saved either. What does one do in this impossible situation?

Biblical Ground Work: Genesis 29 – 33

Jacob, the deceiver, is forced to go live with Uncle Laban who is in love with stuff and money. Jacob has met the male match with himself, for certain. Laban is a master deceiver, but Jacob has the Lord on his side.

Jacob meets up with Rachel, a shepherdess, on his trip to Haran. He falls in love with her and works for Laban for seven years to marry her. Laban, a skilled deceiver, switches Rachel for Leah on their wedding night and Jacob is forced to work for Laban another seven years. What an unfortunate situation Leah finds herself in.

Jacob fulfilled his seven days of marriage to Leah then marries Rachel, whom he loved. He worked another seven years for her which now is adding up to fourteen years of work for Rachel. Leah has a servant named Zilpah and Rachel has a servant named Bilhah. Jacob comes into Haran alone and now has four women to care for. What an unfortunate situation for them all.

Our Biblical Life Lesson – If we allow it, EVERY situation will be unfortunate, but that is NEVER so with God.

Each woman of Jacob found themselves in an unfortunate situation, but each one of them had a choice in that situation. They could choose to do what is right but unfortunately they chose to do what was best for themselves.

Each situation we find ourselves in is meant to grow us to think and act in the will of God. Romans 5:3-4 says, “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

We find ourselves in all manner of situations and how we forge our way through them is how we will come out of the other side of them. The statistics are high that women will be assaulted in one way or another throughout their lifetime so that means that abuse is the norm not the abnormal. How have you come out the other side of that? Are you a victim with no strength of character or a overcomer with hope?

Your hope is the opportunity to use your unintended, unfortunate situation for good so that you may bring hope to others. Can you look back at your unfortunate situation and see the hand of God all over it? Could it have been worse? Could you have been worse?

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

The Game NO ONE Ever Wins by Kathleen Derbyshire

Kathleen Derbyshire- Favouritism

The Game No One Ever Wins in Favouritism

Have you been the favoured child?

Jacob and Esau have a story to tell about favouritism in the family and it is not pretty nor lucky.

Biblical Ground Work: Genesis 24-28

Sarah dies and Abraham sends his servant out to find a wife from his own family for Isaac. He arrives at Abraham’s family and meets up with Rebekah just as he had asked the Lord to do.

The servant retrieves Rebekah and bring her home to his master. Isaac and her fall in love.

The familiar story of infertility plays out with Isaac and Rebekah for 20 years. Isaac pleads with the Lord for her, and his plea is granted. Rebekah becomes pregnant with twins. They are struggling in her womb so she enquirers of the Lord to find out why.

And the Lord said to her:

“Two peoples shall be separated from your body;
One people shall be stronger than the other
And the older shall serve the younger.” (Genesis 25:23)

When Rebekah gives birth another struggle ensues (Genesis 25:24-28) and will continue all the days of Isaac and Rebekah’s life. Jacob, Rebekah’s favoured child, means “supplantor or deceiver”. We watch as Rebekah trains up her son to live up to his name and Isaac trains Esau (hairy) to live up to his new name Edom, red faced with negativity.

Our Biblical Life Lesson – No one ever wins with favouritism.

I know exactly what it is like to give birth to twins. My eldest boys are fraternal twins. I never favoured one over the other because I saw in my own family what favouritism had done. It was loud and proud. We have all lost each other. No one is winning in my family. We are separated by the animosity we have toward each other just as Jacob and Esau are separated by their animosity toward each other.

Do you want your kids to love, admire and respect each other? Then you must put an end to the favouritism that either you grew up in or you are subjecting your children too. No one wins, including you. You will have constant bickering in your house because your kids will be jockeying for position.

Your job as a mother, sister, daughter, boss, grandmother, co-worker, servant of God, is to reflect Jesus without favouritism toward anyone. Even the Apostles were jockeying for position (Matthew 18:1-5; Mark 9:33-37) in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ponder this.

What if your favoured daughter becomes a spoiled brat who wants everyone to serve her. Will you be proud? What if your lesser than child becomes a great leader? Will you be proud? What if the child you ignored becomes someone no one can ignore again by shooting hundreds of people? Will you be proud?

BUT

What if you didn’t favour any of your kids and all of them become who God created them to be? That is what should make you proud.

It’s Your Eve of Security

Your Eve Of Security

Are you finished putting your security in what people say you can and cannot do?

Your Biblical Ground Work: Genesis 2-3

Eve was the first woman to obey and disobey God.

  • She was the first woman to see what a lack of protection looks like from a husband. And the first women to be used by the Devil to introduce sin into her life.
  • She was the first woman to have children. And the first woman to mourn the loss of two sons at the same time.
  • She was the first woman to do every thing from building a house to working the ground.

However, she was never told by the Lord that she couldn’t work for Jesus. She was never told she couldn’t lead a man and was never told to be silent. Quite the opposite: she was spoken to and spoke to God.

She was never told she was subservient to her husband, but enjoyed equality with equal duties to take care of her family. And in case you don’t know — all of humanity was her family.

Our Biblical Lesson: Put your security in Jesus because it is His vision that You are walking in.

The Lord has given you a vision just as He gave Eve one. He will accomplish it in you as you become more like Him in this world. Eve is the mother of all humanity without limitations from man. You can accomplish your vision without limitation from man as well. She did what the Lord assigned to her and ALL the work it took to grow accomplish it.

You can do the same because He is God and you are His.

Putting off walking in your vision from God because someone told you that you are not qualified, due to your feminine features, is a mistake. Eve accomplished what was assigned to her in spite of her new limitations because she was out of the perfect garden. She worked there was fruitful the first time but now she has to toil to be fruitful. She toiled.

The evidence that Eve was never held back is of great significance to all woman. There are many who belief that all women should be held back from their vision from God because they are women. That is fine, let them believe that and don’t let it stop you from going forward.

Put your security in Jesus and He will lead you as well as transform your mind into His thinking. Submitting to the process of understanding His will for your life is walking in your vision even if you don’t know His vision yet.

This has been a Biblical Lesson that you can live life to.

The Role of Women in the Body of Christ

woman behind gold paper

Over the past eight centuries we have been faced with this question. Not as a society, but as an individual woman who is saved by Jesus.

One of the most unsettling things I have heard is that we have to start all over again. Right from the start. Every one of us. And we tend to come to a startling different conclusion each time.

You will have your conclusion of why you can do what the Lord created you to do and I will come to mine. We will think we might have to defend it and we will.

God might call you to serve men and they won’t let you. He might call you to lead, but the elders won’t let you. He might call you into administration but the leaders won’t let you.

You, my lovely, might be an eye but if you don’t get into your role as an eye the other eye will have to do double the work. The same concept goes for every person in the body of Christ, not just women. If men are not allowing women into their roles there is a man where a woman is supposed to be making the body of Christ lopsided.

If you are an eye, be the eye. Don’t let someone make you into a ear. They both have great and useful functions but they are not the same function. Keep your eye on your vision from God so He can move you into your role where He has ordained it to be.
