Jesus Is Better
A Study in Hebrews
Week 1: Jesus Is Better Than Angels
HEBREWS 1-2

KEY PASSAGE: HEBREWS 1:1-4

Summary:

The passage totally discourages angel worship. The Jews had a strong fascination with angels (no wonder angels throughout the Bible warned people not to worship them). The author is arguing that Jesus trumps angels because they serve him. It’s not a win to be engrossed in angels and supernatural world, while being bored with Jesus. Everything is about Jesus and should point to him.

1. God Speaks (Hebrews 1:1-2)

  • God spoke a lot
  • Through human agents
  • Jesus is now how God mainly speaks

2. Four Important Things About Jesus (Hebrews 1:3-4)

  • Jesus perfectly reflects God
  • Jesus’ command holds everything together
  • He cleansed us from our sins
  • Jesus is honored in heaven
  • Conclusion (1:4)

3. Six Reasons Not To Worship Angels (Hebrews 1:5-14)

  • Jesus is God’s Son (heir), angels aren’t
  • God commands angels to worship Jesus
  • Angels serve God and shouldn’t be worshipped
  • Jesus’ reign is forever
  • Jesus created the angels & everything else
  • God doesn’t honor angels the way he honors Jesus
  • Conclusion (1:14)

4. Warning! (Hebrews 2:1-4)

  • We can be apostates if we neglect (ignore, reject) the truth
  • The message (Lesser to greater argument)
  • God punished the disobedience of those who heard the message from angels
  • God will punish those who don’t listen to Jesus

5. More Comparisons of Jesus & Angels (Hebrews 2:5-18)

  • Angels don’t control the future, Jesus does
  • Jesus is better since he took a lower position than angels
  • Result: God gave Jesus all rule and authority
  • Jesus became a perfect leader through suffering
  • Christ Jesus died to save people, not angels
  • Jesus is our relatable high priest
