Before Mary’s Arms by Robert M. Hinnen
I was thinking about the busyness of Christmas
How some might feel left out because of their past
Others of us missing loved ones no longer here
Wondering if there isn’t more or if anyone cares
Then I had this thought about Joseph a carpenter by trade
A man of God traveling with the love of his life by his side
What if Mary with child became ill or delivered on the way
What if they reached Bethlehem and there was no place to stay
Was he thinking how his life would soon be forever changed
Knowing she was carrying a son, not his, but the Messiah
The promised Son of God for the salvation of the world
Did he wonder if he could love this child like his very own
Remembering what the angel of the Lord in a dream had spoken to him
“You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins”
“And she gave birth to her firstborn son… and laid him in a manger”
But perhaps the babe felt first the strong, loved-filled arms of a carpenter
Obedient to God’s Word from the very start, trusting in Him without any doubt
Joseph, son of David, an adopted father, reminds us what Christmas is truly about
Christ our Savior is born!
“And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.”
